Advice for starting a Doctoral Program in Educational Technology

So, my advice on starting a doctoral program in educational technology… I was a part of the University of Florida’s College of Education’s School of Teaching and Learning’s Online Doctorate in Educational Technology. So, some of this information may be specific to that program. However I’d like to think most of it would be good advice for anyone in any program. Let me know if it helps you.

  1. Join a professional organization. We were asked to immediately join AECT for our coursework and for course readings. There are lots of other outstanding organizations, too.
  2. As opposed to a Masters degree, you don’t have as many graded assignments as much as you have reading. Reading and finding information is something you will continue to do and not stop doing, no matter when an “assignment” ends.
