I love George Takei. Since I was in the movie theater with my dad and watched him fly around that Huey with all that “transparent aluminum”, and then, later, listened to him speak on so many important issues… I just love him.
I also love Michelle Obama. I think she is an amazing woman of accomplishment and I think she is a great role model and mom.
I’ve missed seeing both of them in the past six months, when I had the chance to talk with both of them. MEET, like shake hands, say Hi and talk with them. Like missed MEETING them.
Why? Because when Takei was in town and I got invited to go work backstage at the event, my students were doing an international exchange program that we had been planning for weeks. I couldn’t ditch them. And when Michelle Obama was here and I was invited to go see her on the tarmac, I had to be with another group of my students for their speech that they put together after coming back from the US on their study abroad. I promised I’d be there… so I was. I could have ditched both times, the world wouldn’t have ended. But I made a promise.
This is how I know I am a teacher. Because I care. Because I REAAAAALLLY love George Takei. And I didn’t go.
I make myself feel good by writing things like this… so I can think, “see… I am such a great teacher, I give up cool things.” … but I never feel completely better. *sigh* It was George Takei!! ….. *sigh*….
